Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE) on Saturday, highlighting India’s pivotal role in addressing global food and nutrition security challenges.
Speaking at the National Agricultural Science Centre (NASC) Complex in Delhi, PM Modi welcomed participants from around the world, marking the first time in 65 years that India has hosted this prestigious event. “I am delighted to welcome you on behalf of 120 million Indian farmers, over 30 million women farmers, and 30 million fishermen. You are in a nation that cherishes its agricultural heritage and diverse ecosystem,” he said.
PM Modi emphasized India’s status as a food surplus country and its efforts to contribute solutions for global food security. He pointed out India’s unique agricultural diversity, with 15 distinct climatic zones, making it a beacon of hope for worldwide food security. “India is the largest producer of milk, spices, and lentils. While once our food security was a concern, today we are offering solutions for global food and nutrition security,” he remarked.
Highlighting India’s rich agricultural traditions, PM Modi stressed the importance of science and logic in the country’s food practices. He referenced ancient texts like the ‘Krishi Parashar’ and the longstanding tradition of Ayurveda, underscoring India’s holistic approach to agriculture and nutrition.
The Prime Minister also outlined India’s advancements in digital agriculture, mentioning initiatives like the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, which leverages technology to transfer funds directly to farmers’ accounts within seconds. He emphasized the development of digital public infrastructure for crop surveys, enabling farmers to make informed, data-driven decisions.
Addressing global challenges such as water scarcity, climate change, and malnutrition, PM Modi presented India’s millet production, branded as ‘Shri Ann,’ as a sustainable solution. “India’s superfoods, produced with minimal water, can address global nutritional concerns. We are ready to share our bounty with the world,” he asserted.
The conference, running from August 2-7, 2024, focuses on “Transformation Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems.” It aims to address pressing global agricultural challenges, showcase India’s proactive stance, and provide a platform for young researchers and leading professionals to exchange ideas. With around 1,000 delegates from 75 countries, the event seeks to strengthen partnerships, influence policymaking, and highlight India’s advancements in digital and sustainable agriculture.
As India takes a leading role in shaping global agricultural policy, PM Modi paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for his contributions to the upliftment of farmers, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to agricultural innovation and sustainability.
