Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with a bipartisan United States Congressional delegation led by Congressman Michael McCaul on Thursday. The delegation, which includes former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is currently visiting India.
The US delegation, which also includes Representatives Gregory Meeks, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Nicole Malliotakis, Ami Bera, and Jim McGovern, met with Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama at his residence in Dharamshala on Wednesday.
In addition to their meeting with PM Modi, the delegation also held discussions with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra. Jaishankar expressed gratitude for their “strong and continued” support for the strategic partnership between India and the US.
The US Congressional delegation arrived in India on Tuesday and was welcomed by officials from the Central Tibetan Administration at Kangra Airport, Himachal Pradesh. They then traveled to Dharamshala to meet with the Dalai Lama, where Representative McCaul presented him with a framed copy of ‘The Resolve Tibet Act,’ a bipartisan bill recently passed by the US Congress to bolster US support for Tibet.
The delegation’s visit also included a public felicitation ceremony at the main Tibetan temple, where children performed and showcased Tibetan culture. The Dalai Lama gifted a Buddha Statue to Pelosi at the conclusion of their meeting.
The US Congress had passed ‘The Resolve Tibet Act’ last week, urging Beijing to re-engage with the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan leaders to peacefully resolve the Tibet issue.
