IndiaTeam from the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights Visits Sandeshkhali

A six-member team from the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) visited Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district on Saturday to investigate complaints of child abuse in the politically troubled area.

Villagers reported that miscreants snatched a seven-month-old child from her mother’s lap and threw her away. The child is currently receiving medical treatment. Sudeshna Roy, advisor to the state child rights panel, stated that their duty is to protect every child’s rights in the state and assess the situation firsthand.

The team, led by chairman Tulika Das, spoke with the child’s mother and assessed the situation. Tension escalated in Sandeshkhali after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a search at the premises of local Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shajahan over a month ago.

The leader remains at large. Previously, representatives from the National Commission for Women and the National Commission for Scheduled Castes also visited the area.

Sandeshkhali has been witnessing protests over alleged atrocities, including sexual abuse, by some TMC leaders against villagers, sparking a political blame game with leaders from the Congress and other opposition parties criticizing the Mamata Banerjee government.
