IndiaFarmers' Protest: SKM's Bandh Leads to Bus Shutdown in Punjab, Demonstrations at Toll Plazas in Haryana

In Punjab, buses stayed off the roads on Friday as the Samyukta Kisan Morcha’s ‘Bharat Bandh’ unfolded, causing inconvenience to commuters. Demonstrations and road blockades occurred in various parts of the state, including Pathankot, Tarn Taran, Bathinda, and Jalandhar, with farmers demanding the government’s acceptance of their demands, notably a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Haryana witnessed disruptions in Haryana Roadways services in Hisar, where employees supported the bandh. Bhartiya Kisan Union (Charuni) members staged protests at toll plazas, urging commuters not to pay toll tax.

Similar protests were observed in western Uttar Pradesh, where BKU leader Rakesh Tikait participated in a demonstration in Muzaffarnagar. Tikait emphasized demands such as the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report and loan waivers.

The bandh received mixed responses across different regions, with significant participation from various farmer groups and support from Punjab Roadways, Punbus, and PRTC Contract Workers’ Union. Private bus operators also refrained from operating, leading to difficulties for passengers, particularly students and office-goers.

Despite disruptions in transportation and commercial activities, certain essential services such as banks, pharmacies, and healthcare facilities remained operational. The bandh underscored farmers’ demands, including MSP guarantee, implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations, and justice for victims of past agitations.
