Madhya Pradesh Triumphs as Overall Champion in Historic Diu Beach Games 2024
In a resounding display of athletic prowess, Madhya Pradesh emerged as the undisputed overall champion at the inaugural Beach Games 2024, hosted on the pristine blue flag certified Ghoghla Beach in Diu. The landlocked state distinguished itself by securing an impressive total of 18 medals, including a remarkable haul of 7 golds, showcasing the depth of talent within its contingent.
The week-long competition, unfolding from January 4-11, played host to 1404 young athletes from 28 states and Union Territories, who participated in a diverse array of disciplines. The morning and afternoon sessions, strategically scheduled for optimal weather conditions, provided a dynamic and engaging experience for the enthusiastic audience gathered on the sandy shores.
Maharashtra claimed the second spot with a commendable tally of 14 medals, including 3 golds, while Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, and hosts Dadra, Nagar Haveli, Diu & Daman secured 12 medals each. Notably, Assam clinched 8 medals, with an impressive 5 golds.
In a historic twist of events, Lakshadweep etched their name in the annals of Beach Games history by securing the gold medal in Beach Soccer. Their gripping 5-4 triumph over Maharashtra in the final not only added diversity to the medal tally but also underscored the inclusive and nationwide impact of the Diu Beach Games 2024.
The sporting extravaganza featured a diverse range of disciplines, from strategic showdowns in Tug of War to breathtaking feats in Sea Swimming, the martial artistry of Pencak Silat, acrobatic displays of Mallakhamb, and the fast-paced action of Beach Volleyball. Adding an extra layer of excitement was the debut of Beach Boxing, marking a historic moment in the nation’s athletic journey.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Anurag Thakur, expressed his support and enthusiasm on social media, stating, “The energy of the athletes and the beauty of Diu has woven a never-before vibe that is enchanting & exhilarating.” He commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to revitalize India’s beaches, taking a sporting turn with the organization of the first-ever Beach Games in Diu, off the Gujarat coast.
India, endowed with some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, now boasts 12 with Blue Flag certification for cleanliness and sustainable tourism. The success of the Diu Beach Games 2024 not only celebrated sporting excellence but also marked a significant stride in promoting India’s coastal gems on the global stage.
