dSPACE, a prominent provider of simulation and validation solutions worldwide, is broadening its collaboration with the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC). In addition to supplying hardware, dSPACE will now extend its support to university racing teams by offering simulation software. For over a year, the fastest self-driving racecars globally have been equipped with on-vehicle computers from dSPACE, competing at renowned racetracks. Moving forward, university teams will gain access to dSPACE’s software-in-the-loop (SIL) solutions, accompanied by training and engineering assistance. These SIL simulations empower race teams to enhance the reliability, safety, and speed of their AI Drivers within a virtual environment.

dSPACE is expanding its collaboration with the IAC and is set to assist university racing teams not just with hardware but also with simulation software. As the official software-in-the-loop technology sponsor for the IAC, dSPACE introduces its SIMPHERA solutions, a robust framework encompassing simulation models, test automation, test analysis, and a versatile simulation platform. The framework can seamlessly integrate additional components, including HIL simulators. Virtual test environments, accessible on both desktop and cloud platforms, grant teams complete control over all elements within the individually adaptable framework. This includes the ability to substitute components of open simulation models with custom models. In the cloud, teams can effortlessly upload their self-developed control software, the AI-Driver, and promptly conduct initial racing dynamics tests. Future initiatives under this partnership will also concentrate on delivering solutions for advanced sensor simulation.

dSPACE already holds the exclusive position as the on-vehicle computer technology sponsor for the IAC. Over the past year, every IAC racecar has operated with the dSPACE AUTERA AutoBox, demonstrating its resilience, dependability, and prowess as a central computer. The system reads data from lidar, radar sensors, cameras, as well as from various vehicle buses and networks, processes it in real-time, and issues controls and commands for fully autonomous racecars reaching speeds of up to 190 mph.

“In the initial year of our collaboration with the IAC, we witnessed the competence and enthusiasm with which teams leverage pioneering technologies to advance racecar development. Now that the AUTERA AutoBox has firmly established itself as the brain of the IAC racecar, we are taking the next stride by providing top university engineers with a virtual racetrack. Through software-in-the-loop solutions, we equip IAC teams with potent tools that offer early insights and make the crucial difference in securing victories in IAC races,” explained Dr. Carsten Hoff, CEO of dSPACE.

“dSPACE has been a fundamental partner for the IAC, playing a pivotal role in advancing our world’s fastest autonomous racecar. Expanding our collaboration, dSPACE will furnish a customized version of its SIMPHERA SIL product, a best-in-class high-fidelity simulation tool providing our university teams with a true digital twin of the next-gen IAC racecars and track environments. This partnership will facilitate genuine sim-to-real transfer learning, unlocking the full potential of our teams’ AI Drivers to achieve the pinnacle of safe high-speed automation,” stated Paul Mitchell, President of the Indy Autonomous Challenge.

The next IAC competition is the Autonomous Challenge @ CES on January 11, 2024, on the Las Vegas Motor Speedway during CES 2024, the world’s most influential technology event. dSPACE has its own booth (#4300) at CES and will also be represented at the IAC booth (#5901).
