ICC rolls out modifications in DRS protocols and concussion substitute rules

IndiaICC rolls out modifications in DRS protocols and concussion substitute rules

Effective from December 12, 2023, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has implemented significant modifications to playing conditions, specifically addressing the Decision Review System (DRS) in stumping scenarios. Umpires will now exclusively review side-on replays for stumping situations, necessitating teams to separately utilize their DRS option for any caught-behind appeals related to a stumping.

During the preceding series against India, Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey frequently utilized the review for caught-behind following a stumping without depleting the team’s DRS option. Under the revised rule, stumping reviews will solely rely on side-on camera images, eliminating considerations for a possible snick during the assessment.

“The change confines a stumping review to only check for stumped, therefore preventing the fielding team from obtaining a free review for other modes of dismissal (e.g., caught behind) without opting for a player review,” stated the ICC’s new amendment.

In addition to these changes, the ICC has provided more clarity on the concussion replacement rule, stipulating that the substitute player is barred from bowling if the replaced player was suspended from bowling at the time of the concussion. Furthermore, a time limit of four minutes has been enforced for on-field injury assessments and treatment.

In conjunction with these ICC rule adjustments, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to maintain the ‘Dead Ball’ and two bouncers per over rules introduced during the previous Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy tournaments, which will continue into the upcoming Ranji Trophy starting this Friday.

Overall, these alterations are geared towards enhancing clarity and fairness in the decision-making process.
