Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar is scheduled to visit Kathmandu from January 4-5, 2024, at the invitation of Nepal’s Foreign Minister, N.P. Saud. The purpose of the visit is to jointly preside over the 7th meeting of the India-Nepal Joint Commission.

Established in 1987, the India-Nepal Joint Commission serves as a platform for both ministers to comprehensively review various facets of their bilateral partnership. In addition to the commission meeting, Minister Jaishankar will engage with Nepal’s leadership and hold discussions with prominent political figures.

Preceding the visit, Nepal’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Narayan Prakash Saud, convened a meeting with former foreign ministers, ex-foreign secretaries, and former ambassadors to India. The participants provided valuable insights and suggestions on the agenda concerning Nepal-India relations.

Emphasizing the importance of the bilateral ties, the meeting underscored the need for fostering an understanding based on cordiality and mutual interests. Nepal aims to address the trade deficit by exploring avenues to boost exports to India, enhancing cross-border infrastructure, concluding ongoing development projects, and addressing other crucial issues.

Under India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, Nepal holds a priority status as a strategic partner. This visit aligns with the longstanding tradition of high-level exchanges, reinforcing the strong and amicable relationship between these close neighbors.
