Seychelles declares emergency after explosion and flooding

WorldSeychelles declares emergency after explosion and flooding

A blast at an explosives depot on Mahé, Seychelles’ main island, left at least 100 people injured and claimed the lives of two individuals.

The blast, which wreaked havoc in the Providence industrial district and neighboring areas, prompted President Wavel Ramkalawan to declare a state of emergency for much of the day. Describing the affected zone as reminiscent of a war-torn area, President Ramkalawan emphasized the gravity of the situation.

The precise count of casualties remains uncertain, leading to the closure of schools and the enforcement of strict movement restrictions, allowing only essential personnel to move freely. The situation got worse with heavy rains, causing widespread flooding and compounding the challenges faced by the affected areas.

President Ramkalawan issued a plea for citizens to comply with law enforcement instructions and stay indoors for their safety. Recent weather patterns in the nation, characterized by substantial rainfall, have already resulted in significant destruction in various regions.
