IndiaKarnataka gets its first AI news anchor! How dangerous is AI for humans?

With an interesting development, on July 11, 2023, the 24/7 Kannada news channel Power TV introduced Soundarya, Kannada’s first AI news presenter.

Soundarya refers to herself as a “robot anchor” and highlighted the growing influence of artificial intelligence in various industries, including the TV news industry. While robot anchors have already gained popularity in North Indian news channels, this launch marks the first instance of a robot news anchor in South India. Soundarya aims to bring a new dimension to news presentation through the use of AI technology.

Dangers of AI

While artificial intelligence (AI) holds huge potential for benefiting humanity, there are also potential dangers and negative effects associated with its development and deployment. Here are some of the dangerous effects that AI can have on humans:

  1. Job Displacement: AI automation has the potential to replace human workers in various industries. As AI technologies continue to advance, there is a risk of significant job displacement, particularly in sectors where repetitive tasks can be automated. This could lead to unemployment and economic instability for many individuals.
  2. Bias and Discrimination: AI systems are only as unbiased as the data they are trained on. If the training data contains biases, the AI algorithms can perpetuate and amplify those biases. This can lead to discriminatory outcomes in areas such as hiring, lending, and criminal justice. If not carefully designed and monitored, AI systems can inadvertently reinforce existing societal biases and discrimination.
  3. Privacy and Surveillance: The increasing use of AI-powered surveillance systems raises concerns about privacy and civil liberties. Facial recognition technology, for example, can be used to track and monitor individuals without their knowledge or consent. This can infringe upon personal privacy and lead to mass surveillance, creating a frightening effect on freedom of expression and association.
  4. Ethical Decision-Making: AI systems often make decisions based on complex algorithms and data analysis, which can lack ethical reasoning and empathy. In critical domains such as healthcare or autonomous vehicles, ethical considerations and the ability to make nuanced judgments are crucial. If not properly designed and regulated, AI systems could make decisions that prioritize efficiency over human well-being or fail to consider ethical dilemmas.
  5. Dependence and Vulnerability: As AI becomes more integrated into our daily lives, there is a risk of over-reliance and dependence on these systems. This dependence can make humans vulnerable if AI systems fail or are maliciously manipulated. In sectors like transportation or healthcare, relying solely on AI systems without human oversight can have serious consequences in the event of system failures or cyberattacks.
  6. Unemployment and Socioeconomic Disparity: The widespread adoption of AI and automation may lead to significant socioeconomic disparities. While AI can create new job opportunities, there is a risk of exacerbating income inequality if certain individuals or communities are left behind due to a lack of access, skills, or resources needed to adapt to AI-driven changes.

It is very important to approach AI development and deployment with careful consideration of these potential dangers. Implementing robust regulations, ethical guidelines, and transparency measures can help mitigate these risks and ensure that AI is developed and used in a manner that benefits society as a whole.
