According to the civil defense agency of Brazil, the death toll has increased to 13 as a result of the extratropical cyclone that struck southern Brazil over the weekend. Currently, four individuals remain missing.
The storms and floods, which commenced on Friday, have caused extensive devastation, impacting over 40 towns in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. This state shares borders with neighboring Uruguay and Argentina.
The search and rescue efforts for the missing individuals are still ongoing, as confirmed by the civil defense agency.
As reported by the civil defense agency, over the weekend, more than half a million people were left without electricity, and 4,913 individuals were displaced from their homes.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has committed to providing federal assistance to the affected area.
