The gas leak in Ludhiana’s Giaspura area left 11 people dead, including three minors. Eleven others were hospitalized following the incident. Authorities suspect that the gas might have been leaked from the freezers kept inside a grocery store.

 Eleven people, including three minors, were killed and 11 others hospitalized following an incident of gas leakage in Punjab’s Ludhiana on Sunday. The gas reportedly leaked from a grocery store.

Among the 11 people, there were five of a family who tragically died in the gas leakage mishap in a factory of Gyaspura in Ludhiana on Sunday, police said. The deceased include two children and six women.

Police reported that some of the deceased have been identified as Saurav (35), Varsha (35), Aryan (10), Abhay (13), Kalpesh (40) and Chulu (16).

A police official said that the incident came to light around 0745 hrs when a PCR team found some people unconscious on the street. Police rushed them to the nearest hospital. Senior police officials including Additional DCP Sameer Verma, administration, and fire brigade teams reached the spot and cordoned off the area.

Councilor Jaspal Singh, Gyaspura told the media that the gas leakage source was a milk plant being run in a house on 30 feet road. Ludhiana West SDM Swati said that the NDRF team was present on the spot to rescue affected people.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, in a tweet, called the incident tragic and said that police, administration, and NDRF teams were there on the spot and every help was being provided in rescue and relief operations. AAP MLA Gurpreet Singh Goggi was among the leaders who reached the spot.

The incident took place in Giaspura, a thickly populated residential-cum-industrial area, at around 7:30 am. One cat was also found dead on the spot.

The injured were rushed to a hospital, police said. A team of doctors and ambulances were also called to the spot.

An earlier report said nine were dead, but the death toll is rising.
