Last night’s earthquakes rocked the North, 6 things to do during an earthquake

IndiaLast night's earthquakes rocked the North, 6 things to do during an earthquake

Last night, earthquakes rocked Delhi NCR, Kashmir & Northern India frightened people: New machines can detect earthquakes early.

Strong tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR, Jammu & Kashmir, and other parts after a 6.6 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan and Pakistan struck taking lives in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The earthquake was felt in Turkmenistan, India, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, China, Afghanistan, and Kyrgyzstan.

“As we know that the Indo-Australian plate is colliding with the Eurasian plate and this release happened in that region. The HKH region is very active seismologically. The reason why people in northwest India and Delhi felt it for a relatively longer time is because of the depth. The depth of the fault is over 150 km so first primary waves were felt and then secondary waves. Aftershocks are likely now but they can’t be Forecast”, J L Gautam, head of the office and Scientist at the National Center for Seismology, said.

People rushed out of their homes as the earthquake tremors lasted for several seconds in the northern Indian states including Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.

Strong earthquake tremors were felt in the Delhi-NCR region and neighbouring cities late on Tuesday evening.

In fact, the whole of Noida ran out of their homes.

Kumar Mukund tweeted, “In Delhi NCR. Think about your priorities humans. Your time is now. Can you differentiate between dogs and humans now? Run for your life. Even your own home is your enemy at this moment Run and see how far you can from danger.”

J&K: Emergency LSCS was going on at SDH Bijbehara Anantnag during which strong tremors of #Earthquake were felt.
n Kashmir is how the doctors deliver a baby amid tremors in Anantnag hospital.

Six Steps To Take During an Earthquake

  1. Drop down onto your hands and knees before the earthquake knocks you down. This position protects you from falling but allows you to still move if necessary.
  2. Cover your head and neck (and your entire body if possible) underneath a sturdy table or desk. If there is no shelter nearby, get down near an interior wall or next to low-lying furniture that won’t fall on you, and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.
  3. Hold on and stay in your place or shelter or your head and neck until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the shaking shifts it around.
If you are inside, stay inside. If you are outside, go to an open area away from trees, telephone poles, and buildings, and stay there.
  4. Do not run outside or to other rooms during an earthquake. You are less likely to be injured if you stay where you are.  Quickly move away from glass, hanging objects, bookcases, cabinets, or other large furniture that could fall. Watch for falling objects, such as bricks from fireplaces and chimneys, light fixtures, wall hangings, high shelves, and cabinets with doors that could swing open.  If available nearby, grab something to shield your head and face from falling debris and broken glass.  If you are in the kitchen, quickly turn off the stove and take cover at the first sign of shaking.  If you are in bed, hold on and stay there, protecting your head with a pillow. You are less likely to be injured staying where you are. Broken glass on the floor can cause injuries if you walk or roll onto the floor.
  5. Do not stay standing in a doorway. You are safer under a table.  If you are in a high-rise building, drop, cover, and hold on.  Move away from windows and outside walls.  Stay in the building.
  6. Do not use the elevators. The electricity may go out, and the sprinkler systems may come on.  If you are trapped, stay calm. Try to get someone’s attention by tapping on hard or metal parts of the structure. Doing so may increase your chances of being rescued.

Gadgets Detecting Earthquakes

Researchers have trained a machine learning system to detect earthquakes using tiny gravitational signals. While these technologies and gadgets are not specifically designed for detecting earthquakes, they can be useful for early warning and detection. It’s important to note that early detection and warning systems are still being developed and improved, and no system is foolproof. In the event of an earthquake, it’s important to follow safety guidelines and take necessary precautions to protect yourself and others

Smart home devices, such as Google Home and Amazon Alexa, can be integrated with earthquake warning systems to provide early warning alerts to users. For example, the ShakeAlertLA system in Los Angeles sends alerts to users’ smart devices in the event of an earthquake.

Earthquake detecting Quantum communication systems: Quantum communication systems, such as quantum key distribution, can measure vibrations in the ground and potentially be used for detecting earthquakes and landslides.  Machine learning systems can be used to detect earthquakes by analyzing seismic data and identifying patterns.  Can it work effectively in the future?
