Cruel gang torments baby elephant, and activist Tehseen Poonawalla, a Congress supporter reaches out after Vidit Sharma’s video.

Netizens were shocked by the video of a group of young men in Assam torturing a baby elephant in an incident that reportedly took place in the Shalbagan area near Lanka Town in the Hojai district of Assam on October 12.   The gang of men dragged away the calf from the mother, and the baby ran around bewildered and frightened while the gang laughing chased the frightened baby elephant and pulled his tail and beat him.

Vidit Sharma @TheViditsharma wrote on Twitter, “A mad gang dragged a tiny baby elephant away from its mother. The incident took place in Lanka, Assam on October 12.

The elephant calf is bewildered in fear of losing its mother. Strict action must be taken against them.

The video of this incident was shared on Twitter by @TheViditsharma calling for help from Assam CM Himanta Sarma and animal activists.

Reportedly, the baby elephant, who was ill-treated by the villagers, got separated from his mother after the villagers chased away a herd, reported NORTHEAST NOW a news portal.

It is not clear whether the perpetrators were caught later or not. The incident has outraged netizens and many are demanding strict action aganist alll the accused.

Animals are facing immense cruelty, including dogs, cats, cows, and even elephants.  According to Indian Animal Protection Organizations and All Creatures Great and Small estimates, 4,93,910 animals were ill-treated in various occurrences between 2010 and 2020.

The basic cruelty law of India is contained in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960. The objective of the Act is to prevent the infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering on animals and to amend the laws relating to the prevention of cruelty to animals. The Act defines “animal” as any living creature other than a human being.

An update says, “Calf sent back to herd yesterday itself.” However, it is not clear whether the “hooligans” were punished for their torturous act.
