India remembers Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries on 2nd October declared by UN as International Day of Non-Violence

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated greatly in India to mark the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi on 2 October and is one of the three national holidays of India. The UN General Assembly announced on 15 June 2007 that it adopted a resolution that declared that 2 October will be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence as he was a non-violent freedom fighter. He is also known as the “Father of The Nation” and this title was given to him by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose for his relentless struggles for independence.

Team UWC pays rich tributes to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and the true son of the soil, Lal Bahadur Shastri, on the occasion of their birth anniversaries.

Lal Bahadur Shastri born on 2 October 1904 and died on 11 January 1966 was an Indian politician and statesman who served as the 2nd Prime Minister of India from 1964 to 1966 and 6th Home Minister of India from 1961 to 1963. He promoted the White Revolution – a national campaign to increase the production and supply of milk – by supporting the Amul milk co-operative of Anand, Gujarat, and creating the National Dairy Development Board. Underlining the need to boost India’s food production, Shastri also promoted the Green Revolution in India in 1965. This led to an increase in food grain production, especially in the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.

Interestingly, over the last few years, and quite shockingly, every Gandhi Jayanti, Godse, Gandhi’s killer, trended on Twitter as a national hero which was done exclusively by the right-wing Godse lovers.  Today while Godse is trending again lightly, it is more to rebuke him for killing Mahatma Gandhi with no exaltations on his behalf.  It looks like the times are changing.

Netizens are saying, “Godse lovers have no choice but to praise Gandhi Ji to get acceptance because Gandhi was an iconic figure in the freedom movement with the entire networking of the Indian Army, farmers, and all the top-notch leaders working with him.  They were all deeply connected to work together in the freedom movement with Gandhi leading at the helm and it is considered sacrilege in India to defame Gandhi.
