Will you hit the streets in protest if ‘they’ come to my house tomorrow?” #TMC leader #MamataBanerjee asked her party workers.
Mamata Banerjee asks her party workers this question at a rally. While Banerjee did not make clear who she meant by “they”, her comments on Sunday came at a time the central agencies have arrested two of her close aides.
A few other Trinamool leaders are also under the scanner of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with various allegations. However, on Sunday, Trinamool workers and supporters responded to her poser by shouting in unison that would launch an agitation. Banerjee then asked them to agitate in a democratic way.
“You will agitate in a democratic manner, right? I will fight my own battle. But you people will have to fight your battles,” she said. Banerjee said the party would protest democratically if “any of my colleagues” were lodged in jail “without rhyme or reason” as she launched an all-out attack against central agencies and the opposition parties in the state. “How many will they arrest? I will start a ” jail bhoro” agitation by rallying everybody,” she warned.
Former Trinamool secretary general and the virtual number two in the cabinet Partha Chatterjee was arrested by the ED last month while the CBI earlier this week took the party’s powerful Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal into custody. While Chatterjee was arrested in connection with the alleged irregularities in the appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff in government-aided schools during his tenure as state education minister, Mondal is in custody for his purported involvement in the illegal trafficking of cows to Bangladesh.
While supporting Mondal, she said “What is the allegation against him? That he has taken money by trafficking cows. But where does the money for trafficking cows come from? Why do you send cows from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar through Bengal? “Whose responsibility is it to ensure cattle is not trafficked? It is the responsibility of the BSF.
Who is the central minister in charge of BSF? Home Minister Amit Shah”. Banerjee expressed unease that the central government could hatch conspiracies targeting her close associate and city mayor Firhad Hakim and Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
The West Bengal Chief Minister exhorted her workers to take out rallies and hold meetings in every administrative block of the state from August 16 against the central agencies’ partisan role and the way the opposition parties were “insulting” the Trinamool.
