The story, Samrat Prithviraj is based on Prithviraj Raso, a Braj language epic poem about the life of Prithviraj Chauhan, a Rajput king from the Chahamana dynasty.

The film reveals the story of the great warrior king, Prithviraj Chauhan’s fight with Muhammad Ghori, a ruler from the Ghurid Dynasty who conquered India laying the foundation of Muslim rule in the country for centuries.

The film Samrat Prithviraj, directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi was one of the most awaited movies in Bollywood. The research for the movie took 18 years. For a moment, if we do not look at the positive or negative reviews of the movie, the question arises of how the research of 18 years can be shown in a movie that took only 42 days to shoot.

Akshay Kumar, the lead actor of Samrat Prithviraj, reveals they completed shooting Prithviraj in 42 days; In an interview, he says, ‘It was delayed due to the pandemic.’

The movie was released on its official release date, 3 June 2022, and gathered both positive and negative reviews from the audience. Umair Sandhu, a UAE-based movie critic showed his enthusiasm and love for Samrat Prithviraj with a tweet “BIG SLAP for Paid Media Haters! #SamratPrithviraj will BLOW your mind. One of the Best Period Dramas ever made in India. #AkshayKumar seems born to play this role and he enacts it with such precision, such flourish, such confidence that it leaves you asking for more”,

However, on the side of the critics, Google reviews from the Indian audience give negative reviews.

The drawbacks of the film are, that it is more focused on the Muslim invaders consistently calling them outsiders rather than highlighting the life of the brave legendary King Prithviraj Chauhan and does not reveal clearly how he rose to power.

The message of the movie is displayed in its final moments when how after Prithviraj Chauhan’s death at the hands of Muhammad Ghori, “Bharat” gained independence from “outsiders” only 755 years later, in 1947”.

To get a clear understanding of the subject, Samrat Prithviraj was heavily endorsed by politicians from the BJP and Home Minister Amit Shah attended a special screening of Samrat Prithviraj, two days ahead of its release and applauded the film as “an epic (which) can at times ignite pride and mass awareness that hundreds of books cannot”. On June 2nd, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath watched the film in Lucknow and declared it tax-free in the state.

A week before the release of Samrat Prithviraj, Akshay Kumar said in an interview “It’s sad we don’t know about our own kings. There were only three-four lines about Samrat Prithviraj in the history books that I read. Thanks to this film, I got to know so much about him. I don’t think anyone else also knew about him”.

“When I was talking to my son about him (Prithviraj), he said ‘I know about the British Empire, Mughal empire, but who’s he?’ So it’s a sad thing that we don’t know about our “own kings”. There were only a few lines about Rana Pratap, Rani of Jhansi. But there are a lot of chapters on Mughals,” he added.

The 54-year-old actor was seen pleading in an interview to correct the history textbooks and bring about a balance and introduce more of ‘our’ culture, Hindu kings where he also referred to the Muslim rulers as “invaders”.

Samrat Prithviraj is Manushi Chillar’s debut movie which tells a lot about why her acting didn’t do justice to the film with her role in Sanyogita, the Princess of Kannauj. The film highlights the popular story, where the king, Prithviraj trespasses Sanyogita’s Swayamvar and elopes with her; that also shows the sign of patriarchy in how she defies her father and falls in love with his enemy. But later on, the courage of Sanyogita was also depicted in the movie to fight for the rights of women as well as ruling rights as well. In the end, it is believed Sanyogita committed Jauhar which again portrays the norms and opposite to the rights that she was fighting for.

The movie is considered an action film which is not accurate according to the audience and could have been better if it was more focused on the history and bravery of the king rather than digressions on “outsiders”, and religious sentiments.
