The 18-year-old nurse was allegedly gang-raped and murdered on the first day at her job at a private hospital in the Bangarmau area of Unnao district on Saturday.
The body of the nurse was found hanging at New Jeevan Nursing Home in the Bangarmau area of the district on Saturday, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sashi Shekhar Singh told PTI on Sunday.
What Happened That Fateful Day
According to her family, the hospital had just opened in April and the girl had joined the hospital on April 29 and had rented a room nearby. That morning, there was since there were no patients in the hospital, the nurse had returned to her room. Then at “around 10 in the night, she allegedly got a call from the hospital owner, who asked her to do the night shift,” said police.
The nurse’s mother said she got a call from the hospital that her daughter had committed suicide. When she reached the site, it was evident that her daughter had been murdered, she said as there was a mask on her face and she was clutching a piece of cloth in her hand, additional superintendent of police Shashi Shekhar Singh said.
Her body was seen hanging by a rope from the outer wall of the hospital at around 11 am on Saturday by some visitors apparently. The rope was tied to an iron bar protruding from a pillar on the roof of the building. It was apparent she could not hang herself from that height.
Police Investigations
The woman’s family has lodged a police complaint, said Gajannath Shukla, officer-in-charge of Bangarmau police station. The victim’s body has been sent for autopsy.
“We are investigating the matter. The mother of the deceased has named four people in the FIR, including the owner of the hospital,” Shukla said.
Police Shashi Shekhar Singh said, “We are trying to find out who put a mask on her face and also details about the cloth,” Singh said. “The hospital has been sealed and we are waiting for the autopsy report.”
“I have named the hospital owner Anil Kumar and three staff members, including Noor Alam, Chand Alam, and one other person, in the FIR,” she said.
2017 The Unnao Rape Case
The 2017 Unnao rape case rocked the nation because it involved the former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar. The case refers to the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl on 4 June 2017 in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, India. On 16 December 2019, former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted for the rape on 20 December 2019 and sentenced to life imprisonment. Further Sengar was found guilty of the death of the girl’s father in judicial custody.
UP is Still Not a Safe Haven for Women
In 2021 PM Modi in Varanasi stated UP is now a safe haven for daughters. He said, “Earlier, parents used to be worried about their daughters but today that situation has changed.” This does not seem to be the case in reality.
As one netizen tweeted: The body of a 19 yr old nurse was found hanging at a hospital in Unnao, UP. Yes, the same Unnao. Her parents claim that she was r@ped and then k*lled. The horror continues.

Honestly speaking, Uttar Pradesh and some other states have the highest number of rapes because one cannot change devious rape-programmed mindsets overnight. A lot of work has to be done in Uttar Pradesh as in other states and mass-scale education that refines the thinking can reduce rapes to the point of near-eradication. One cannot say it is a lack of jobs, but a lack of refined transforming education at an early age might help to deter rapes and is very important.
