Delhi, meat, liquors shops to be closed during Navaratri

IndiaDelhi, meat, liquors shops to be closed during Navaratri

Mukkesh Suryaan, mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation gets meat and liquor shops closed for 9 days during Navaratri.

He justifies his steps by saying he is doing this keeping in view the sentiments of the general public and warned critical orders may be issued to officers concerned to take action for the closure of meat shops during the 9-day period of the Navratri festival from 2nd April to 11th.

He wrote in his letter:
“Necessary directions may be issued to the officials concerned to take action for the closure of meat shops for nine days. During Navratras, people visit temples to pay respects to the goddess and seek blessings. Their religious beliefs are affected when they come across meat shops or when they have to bear the foul smell on their way to offer daily prayers. Moreover, some meat shops dump waste in gutters or on roadsides, which stray dogs feed on. This creates unhygienic conditions,” Suryan stated in the letter.

The letter added, “Such events can be restricted if meat shops are closed down during Navratras (from April 2 to 11) in areas under SDMC’s jurisdiction, including those near temples, to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.”

He also told TOI that the decision was taken on complaints received from locals. “I visited some residential areas on Sunday and people complained about the opening of meat shops leading to unhygienic conditions. The decision is not at all aimed to target any community and we simply want to maintain cleanliness,” he added.

The mayor also wrote to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal requesting him to shut down all liquor shops for nine days and take action to stop people drinking outside these places during the festival. SDMC officials refused to comment on the matter. No official order was issued by the commissioner till Monday in this regard.

It is surmised that Arvind Kejriwal may shut down all liquor shops for nine days and carry out steps to stop people drinking outside these places during the festival.

While East Delhi Municipal Corporation has not issued such an order, mayor Shyam Sunder Agarwal said an appeal was made to people in this trade to avoid opening shops for nine days. “In any case, our slaughterhouse was non-operational during the last three Navratras according to the norms,” he added. The north corporation mayor was unavailable for comments.

The actions of what the government is doing come across as foolhardy and as a netizen sarcastically puts it: “SOURCES: During Ramzan, 99% of households in Islamabad don’t even drink water, so we’ve decided to suspend water supply to the entire city for the month.  Fine will be imposed on those found drinking water: Mukhtar Sheikh, Mayor of Islamabad Municipal Corporation” (this is a jibe)

If each community did it unto each other as now is being done, think of the chaos, loss, and brokenness the nation will undergo.  If so-called Christian and Muslim majority nations inflicted their beliefs and rules on the populations, how difficult will living become for everyone? Is the government thinking of the consequences of its actions?
