While China’s imports grow, can Lal Imli Dhariwal be revived in India?

EconomyWhile China's imports grow, can Lal Imli Dhariwal be revived in India?

Kanpur’s Shan Lal Tamarind-Dhariwal mills, Lal Imli Dhariwal, which was the pride of Kanpur, will now be closed forever.

Originally manufactured in Kanpur under the name of Lal Imli Dhariwal , this company was established in 1920.  Its blankets were made from the high-quality sheep marino wool of Australia.

The 146-year-old mill headquartered in Kanpur, BIC nominally operated two woolen mills in Kanpur and Dhariwal (Punjab). In 2006 the company employed over 2,700 people and had aggregated revenues of ₹373 million (US$4.9 million).  Production in Lalimali (Kanpur) and Dhariwal (Punjab) mills has been stopped since 2013.

The pride of Kanpur and the British India Corporation (BIC) company formed by the British, the Lalimli-Dhariwal mills, now is closed with the proposal for the closure of Ulain Milo approved by the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), sent to the Union Cabinet and after getting the seal of approval from there, where the red tamarind is shut forever.

The Red Tamarind and Dhariwal Mills were operated under the British India Corporation (BIC). Kanpur’s Lal Tamarind Mill was also an election issue for the past 100 years.  decades. Political parties got the votes of the workers in the name of introducing red tamarind, but the leaders did not fulfill their promise. Now red tamarind will be sealed forever.  Are there any hopes of reviving it?

Yogi Adityanath in 2017 made a blanket boost to increase revival chances for Lal Imli, however, until now nothing has materialized.  Chinese imports are taking higher precedence.

Make In India has failed purely because of the absurd high amount of taxes and other government-mandated levies. Manufacturers ask why there is an 18% GST on machines required to set up their businesses.

Notably, India’s imports from China soar to almost $100 billion, led by smartphones, machinery and according to China’s official data, its exports to India reached $97.52 billion in 2021, while total two-way bilateral trade touched $125.66 billion.  Many Indian manufacturers cannot beat the competition from China’s good quality and low prices and thus make is India is getting muffled.

As someone said sadly, “Once upon a time Lal Imli Dhariwal was a brand for blankets in India, now, it is all over.”
