The first case of Omicron variant of Coronavirus was detected in Gujarat on Saturday in a 72-year old man who returned from Zimbabwe.

The man had returned to Jamnagar from Zimbabwe, tested positive for the new variant. State health department officials said that the swab samples of the NRI, who had landed in Jamnagar on November 28, have been found infected with Omicron variant.

This takes the total confirmed Omicron cases in India to three after two cases were reported in Bengaluru last week. He has been kept in the isolation ward of Jamnagar Dental College.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel reviewed the situation after the first case of Omicron was confirmed in the state. The state government is keeping a stringent watch on those arriving from Africa and other countries affected by the new variant of COVID-19. The Centre has advised states and union territories to maintain extra vigil to prevent the spread of the new variant of coronavirus.
