IndiaCloudburst & flash floods in Kishtwar, 7 lost their lives, 42 missing

A tragic cloudburst incident occurred in Honzar Village of Dachhan region in Kishtwar causing loss of lives and missing people.

Presently, seven people have lost their lives with 42 people missing, a bridge crashed down and houses were destroyed.  The SDRF, Indian Army, and IAF assisting in rescue operations.

Incessant rainfall caused the water level to rise in River Chenab in the Ramban district. NHPC Limited, which runs the Salal Power Station, said that the water level in the Chenab river may rise due to the cloudburst at 50 km upstream of Kiru in the Kishtwar district. Due to this, emergent flushing from the Salal reservoir may be conducted at any time. People are advised not to go near riverbanks.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh assured that rescue operations are going on with the help of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and the Indian Army, He further informed that the Indian Air Force has been called to airlift the injured to nearby hospitals.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Director General of Police Dilbag Singh to take stock of the situation arising due to the cloudburst. He informed that SDRF, Army, and local administration are carrying out rescue operations.

“The meteorological department has predicted heavy rains during the upcoming days and water levels in rivers and nallas are expected to rise, which can pose a threat to the inhabitants residing near rivers, nallas, water bodies, and slide-prone areas,” the district administration said in an advisory issued late on Tuesday night.

A cloudburst is basically a very heavy down-drafted rainstorm in desert and mountainous regions, and in interior regions of continental landmasses due to the warm air current from the ground or below the clouds rush up and carry the falling raindrops up with it.  It happens unexpectedly, very abruptly, and this time, was tragically damaging and sympathy is pouring out for the victims during this unfortunate time.
