New Delhi, Feb 9, a large protest to ”sansad gherao”  march against farm laws, unemployment, and hike in fuel prices consisting of Youth Congress leaders and activists started from Jantar Mantar, but the protest was stopped by the police on Raisina Road.

Leading the protest was IYC president Srinivas B V.  A public meeting was first held at Jantar Mantar before this and several senior leaders including leaders of Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, MPs Deepender Singh Hooda, Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev, Delhi Congress president Anil Kumar among others were present.

IYC president Srinivas B V vocalized strongly, “The general public is troubled by rising inflation, fuel prices, and unemployment but the government is giving speeches instead of relief to them.”

He added, “The IYC is fighting the battle of youth and farmers and will not allow the government to function in an “arbitrary” manner.”  He further said, “The central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anti-farmer and against the youngsters of the country. I want to tell the Prime Minister and the BJP government at the Centre that democracy does not allow dictatorship.”

While the protestors were on their way to Parliament, the police brutally beat them with sticks, yanked them roughly so that their shoes slipped off, and several were admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital with injuries.

On being taken away they chanted:

Jab sarkar darte hain, Police ko agai karte hain” (when the government is scared, they bring the police forward).

Many of the protestors stated they were farmers’ sons and as the police dragged one of the farmers on the ground, he cried out, “We brought the soil from our village to give Modi and we won’t stop our protests unless they take back the three black laws.”

IYC president Srinivas B V, Congress MP Digvijay Singh along with some leaders of the party and activists were detained.

The Youth Congress shared pictures of the brutality and said, “Many IYC workers have been injured by the police brutality during #SansadGherao.  They have been admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.  Your struggle will not go in vain. We will continue our fight against this oppressive government.”
