A high-speed dumper collided with a sugarcane-laden tractor-trolley and crushed the workers sleeping on a Surat footpath. 12 of them died on the spot.
Surat: Late night in Surat district of Gujarat, an uncontrolled vehicle crushed 20 people sleeping on the roadside, 15 of whom died. Police said today that the incident occurred near Palod Gam on Kim-Mandvi road, about 50 km from here.
The dead were identified as laborers from Kushalgarh in the Banswara district of Rajasthan. Children and women are also among the dead.
Around midnight, a high-speed dumper collided with a sugarcane-laden tractor-trolley and crushed the workers. 12 of them died on the spot. Three of the eight injured died at the Smimer Hospital in Surat.
Police seize the dumper and apprehend its driver and cleaner. The driver was reportedly drunk. The matter is being investigated in detail.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his grief over the accident and announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.
