New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Sardar Buta Singh died here on Saturday. He was 86 years old. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.

Sardar Buta Singh was born on 21 March 1934 in Mustafapur village in Jalandhar district of Punjab. Before entering politics, Buta Singh was a journalist. He first won the election as an Akali Dal candidate, later joined the Congress.

The late Buta Singh had won the Lok Sabha elections eight times. As Union Minister, he also served as the Governor of Bihar along with the Ministry of Home, Agriculture, Railways, and Communications (and other portfolios).

He was also the chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Tribes (2007-2010) during Dr. Manmohan Singh was in power as Prime Minister.
