IndiaSetting up farmers' committee proposed, farmers say solution lies in withdrawing laws

In the sixth round of talks with the farmer leaders, the government said that it will find a middle ground about the demands of the farmers, the farmers said that the issue will be resolved only with the withdrawal of new farm laws

New Delhi: The government on Wednesday proposed to constitute a committee on the demands of the protesting farmers and said they would find a middle ground to resolve the issue.

According to sources, in the sixth round of talks with the leaders of the government, the government said that a middle way has to be found out about the demands of the farmers. A committee will be formed to consider their demands for three agrarian reform laws although the government has not yet commented on the matter.

The government had earlier proposed to set up a committee at the beginning of the month, which was rejected by the farmers. Prior to the meeting, however, the farmer leaders insisted on the withdrawal of the newly passed three farm laws, saying that they are not for anything less than that.

Today is the 36th day of the farmers’ movement to demand the withdrawal of new farm laws. A large number of farmers from many states on the border of the capital are stuck with their demands.

Withdrawal of farm laws only way to solve the issue

Prior to the sixth round of talks with the government on Wednesday, the leaders, who were opposing the agrarian reform laws, clearly stated that the solution to this issue will be found only by repealing the three laws.

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait said that the farmers would agree to end their agitation only if the three new agricultural laws are withdrawn and legalized minimum support price (MSP). He said that it is now up to the government to end this impasse.

On asking about his future strategy, he said that the agitation would be intensified and more demonstrations will be staged if the demands of the farmers are not met. He told reporters before the sixth round of talks with the farmers and the government began that farmers would not back down from their demands.

It is worth mentioning that the government has invited 40 farmer organizations for the sixth round of talks with the farmers, with whom negotiations are going on at Vigyan Bhawan in the capital. Prior to the meeting, Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Narendra Tomar ate the langar with the farmers brought from the gurdwara.
