Manama: Crown Prince Sheikh Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa has been appointed the new Prime Minister of the country by Shah Hamad bin Issa Al Khalifa of Bahrain.
Bahrain’s official news agency BNA has reported quoting an executive order issued in this regard on behalf of the royal family. Earlier Bahrain’s Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa died on Wednesday.
The 84-year-old Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa had been ill for a long time and was undergoing treatment in the United States. His name is the record for the longest head of any government in the world. Bahrain has announced a week of national mourning over his death.
According to media reports, the King of Bahrain has appointed Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa as the new Prime Minister of the country with immediate effect. The Royal Family of Bahrain has the right to appoint the Prime Minister of the country without consulting Parliament.
Regional experts believe that the young Crown Prince has been appointed as the new Prime Minister only to calm the internal religious discord of Bahrain. Shia Muslims in Bahrain have accused the Late Prime Minister of violating their rights.
